A Private Premise: This little painting started life called “Protection” and was one of the group exploring pinks and their neighbor oranges and reds, as a meditation on the kinds of female presence in the human psyche – intentionally pulling away from an ever narrowing definition of acceptable femininity. I remember that CS Lewis said somewhere in the Trilogy series that God is so profoundly much more than a gender, as I mix yellows and browns into the pinks; setting the results side-by-side with admixture greens and blues, layering them as differently as possible. The conversation I wanted to hear starts to come – starting with a red premise, glowing from under a weathered pink-yellow, a worried pink-orange, beside a presumptuous clear blue, or a resigned greened-black. Unplanned shapes assert themselves and share color between themselves in a way that seems relational and generous. And then you think about how each precious unpredictable human life path, having started with the gold underlayment of the Creator, and a private personal color premise, then becomes layered with shades and tones of life experience… and yet unalterably remains a continuous expression of the Creator.
